Job Description

The City of Chesapeake's Department of Human Services is seeking a Family Services Supervisor to lead a team of dedicated professionals committed to helping individuals and families overcome poverty, abuse, and neglect. This position plays a vital role in protecting vulnerable adults and promoting the dignity and worth of every citizen in our community. Key Responsibilities Include: Supervises and provides day-to-day guidance to Family Services staff Oversees adult service programs, including Long-Term Care Screenings, Assisted Living Assessments, Companion Care, Adult Foster Homes, Adult Protective Services, and Guardianship case management Ensures services are delivered timely and in compliance with state and local mandates Manages unit workflow, operating procedures, and performance standards Provides staff development, conducts performance evaluations, and supports employee relations Collaborates with other agencies, organizations, and courts to coordinate client services Oversees unit budgets and monitors fiscal expenditures Reviews and maintains case documentation and data using information systems such as Peer Place Participates in policy development and program monitoring to ensure quality service delivery Serves as emergency on-call supervisor for Adult Protective Services and Child Welfare Qualifications: Experience supervising social work or human services staff Knowledge of public social services programs and adult protective services Strong planning, organizational, and leadership skills Ability to manage multiple programs and ensure regulatory compliance Excellent interpersonal and decision-making abilities Join our team and help shape stronger futures for Chesapeake's citizens through compassionate leadership and impactful service. Required Qualifications

VOCATIONAL / EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT :

In order to be evaluated for vacancies in the Family Services Occupational Group, applicants shall possess the qualifications outlined in (1) OR (2) below:
  1. A minimum of a bachelor's degree in the human services field, including Social Work, Rehabilitation Counseling, Psychology, Clinical Psychology, Counseling Psychology, Counseling and Guidance, Counselor Education, Human Services, Sociology, Family and Child Development, Aging Studies, Gerontology, Criminal Justice with a minor in one of the above studies, or other related degrees determined by the Department of Human Resources based on the similarity of the curriculum and course content.
  2. A minimum of a bachelor's degree in any field accompanied by a minimum of two years of appropriate and related, full-time equivalent experience in a human services related area.
To be considered for promotion, persons currently employed in the Family Services Occupational Group by a local department prior to September 1, 1990, who do not meet the qualifications outlined in either (1) or (2) above, must possess four years of appropriate and related experience in a human services area and must have successfully completed all available competency-based training related to the promotional area. SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES : Requires a valid driver's license and a driving record in compliance with City Driving Standards . EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT : In addition to satisfying the vocational/education standards, this position requires a minimum of four years of appropriate and related, full-time equivalent experience. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS : Emergency Duty (On-Call) participation is required to comply with mandated responsibilities as listed under Section 63.2-1503,B; Section 63.2-900; and 63.2-1604-63.2-1610, Code of Virginia. Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term departmental needs and/or City-wide emergencies. Preferred Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Human Services or a related field; or a degree in any field with a minimum of two years of relevant experience in a Human Services setting, specifically in Adult Services or Adult Protective Services, in a lead or supervisory role. Minimum of two years of supervisory or leadership experience. Demonstrated experience in Adult Services, Adult Protective Services, or other Human Services programs, including completion of required training programs. At least two years of work experience with a public social services agency or in a related setting, providing services to adults aged 60 and older, as well as individuals aged 18-59 with disabilities.
